¤ Kanpur At A Glance
Situated on the right bank of the river Ganga, Kanpur (formerly called Cawnpore) is the largest city in Uttar Pradesh. Though a comparatively new city, Kanpur has registered a phenomenal growth in its population because a sizeable chunk of the rural population has migrated to this place in search of livelihood.
It was one of the major centres of the Indian Revolt of 1857 which culminated in the transfer of power of the Indian Government from the English East India Company to the British Crown.

General Wheeler’s entrenchment, All Souls’ Memorial Church, Sati Chaura Ghat, Military Cemetery, King Edward Memorial Hall and Christ Church. However Kanpur’sclaim to fame is that it is one of India’s foremost industrial centres (leather manufacture and commerce). Textiles (woollen and cotton), flour, sugar and chemicals constitute some of its other major industries.
