H1N1 Influenza A (Swine Flu)
Primarily through respiratory droplets, so:
• Coughing
• Sneezing
• Touching respiratory droplets on yourself, another person or an object, then touching mucus membranes (e.g., mouth, nose, eyes) without your washing hands.
The 'H1N1 Influenza A' virus (formerly referred to as Swine flu) is not spread through food. You cannot get 'H1N1 Influenza A' from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe.
Emergency warning signs in Adults
• Difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath
• Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
• Sudden dizziness
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Emergency warning signs in Children
• Fast breathing or trouble breathing
• Bluish or grey skin color
• Not drinking enough fluids
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• Irritable, the child does not want to be held
• Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Take these every day steps to protect your health
• Wash your hands often with soap and water especially after you cough or sneeze. Wash for 15 – 20 seconds & wipe dry.
• Alcohol-based hand wipes or gel sanitizers are also effective.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread this way.
If you are not keeping well
• It is advisable to stay at home if you’re not keeping well or until you’re symptom-free and advised to resume work.
• If you are not keeping well, limit your contact with other people as much as possible.
• Consult a doctor before seeking specialized help and tests.
Do we need to wear a mask?
• If you are not sick you do not have to wear a mask.
• If you are caring for a sick person, you can wear a mask when you are in close contact with the ill person and dispose it off immediately after contact and clean your hands thoroughly afterwards.
• A mask is a must particularly when you have to go to a hospital to get tested and you have to be in the waiting room.
